Benefits of Raw Honey

Did you know that honey is considered a superfood?  What is a superfood you ask?  Well, superfoods are rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, and phenolic acids which provide potential health benefits like anti-inflammatory properties, antibacterial effects, and may even help with wound healing!  Caveat - everyone should check with their health-care provider before using anything for medicinal purposes.

The Mayo Clinic (https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-honey/art-20363819) states that the research on honey indicates that it may be helpful for cardiovascular health, coughs/colds, gastrointestinal diseases, neurological diseases, and even in wound care.  Although, giving honey to infants under 1 year old could cause a rare but serious gastrointestinal condition from exposure to Clostridium botulinum spores.  So, refrain from giving children under the age of 1 year any raw honey.

Raw honey is different from a lot of store-bought honey in that it has not been pasteurized.  Pasteurization is the process of heating a food to kill unwanted yeast.  It has the added benefit of making honey shelf-stable and removes a lot of the crystallization process concerns.  However, that process also destroys much of honey's beneficial nutrients.

Raw honey can help those with allergies by giving the body a continual low dose of pollen which can help the body prepare for the onslaught of allergens during the peak season.  It is ideal to choose raw honey from sources which are close to where you live to help prepare your body for the allergens which may be in your area.  Raw honey also contains vitamins and minerals - calcium, magnesium, manganese, niacin, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, and zinc.  Raw honey is also antibacterial and anti-fungal and can help heal wounds (but see your doctor first!).  Local raw honey has also been shown to have immune-boosting benefits and can help with digestive issues such as GERD (acid reflux), stomach ulcers, and aid in maintaining a healthy gut microbiome which is crucial for digestion and overall health.

One of our FAVORITE uses of raw honey is when we have a cold, cough, or sore throat.  Making a hot toddy with lemon, honey, and a shot of whisky will help tame symptoms of those ailments!  Just use the whisky in moderation!  =)

Honey has also been shown to aid in brain function, memory retention, and may help reduce the risks associated with Alzheimer's disease, while improving mood and stress.
